PLATELET RICH FIBRIN

What is Platlet Rich Fibrin ?

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is a more advanced form of platelet therapy that involves the preparation of a fibrin matrix along with platelets, leukocytes and stem cells. This matrix provides a scaffold for cell migration and proliferation, enhancing the regenerative process.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) vs Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)

PRF is prepared at a lower speed of 700 rpm compared to PRP’s 3500 rpm, preserving a higher concentration of cells in the plasma, including:

  • 3X more platelets,
  • 6X more white blood cells,
  • 6X more red blood cells,
  • 1.5X more monocytes,
  • 6X more lymphocytes,
  • 7X more neutrophils,
  • 200X more mesenchymal stem cells.

Unlike PRP, which contains sodium citrate as an anticoagulant, PRF does not include additives, preserving the fibrin matrix. This allows for a slower release of growth factors over up to 2 weeks, compared to only 4 hours with PRP therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions.

PRF is generally considered safe because it uses the patient’s own blood, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions or infections. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects, which will be reviewed prior to treatment.

The entire PRF procedure typically takes about 1 hour including blood drawing, processing, and injection.

The number of sessions varies depending on the specific treatment goals and the individual’s response to the therapy. Multiple sessions may be recommended, and maintenance sessions may be needed for long-term benefits.

Results from PRF therapy can vary, and it may take several weeks to months to see noticeable improvements. Collagen stimulation and tissue regeneration are gradual processes.

Side effects are generally mild and may include temporary swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site.

Discomfort during PRF injections is typically minimal. A numbing cream is often applied to the treatment area to enhance patient comfort.

PRF may contribute to improvements in skin texture and tone, which could lead to a reduction in the appearance of dark circles. However, results can vary.
